Learn the necessary 8 steps to create shop drawings of a steel structure using tekla.
Introduction:
Welcome to let’s build, in this video, I will enlighten you on the steps needed for creating the execution drawings & reports of a steel structure and we will show a real life example of an executed Steel canopy. ( You can check the video or/and read the article they are inter sting I believe!
So this is the structure we are going to create.
Step 1: Create the grid
It is a very easy, yet it is very important, double check the dimensions used and make sure you have taken site measurements. In this example, we are creating a steel canopy connected to a concrete structure. Exact measurements, wont be rounded up to fives and zeros. You might get a spacing of 6318 mm for example, that's normal in these kind of structure. So if you encounter such numbers in the grid, you are doing it right!
Step 2: Create the Existing Concrete Structure
Although we are not going to create any drawing for the concrete elements, yet it is necessary to model them. You need them as reference for the erection of the canopy. Make sure you are keep some space between the concrete and the steel structure ( couple of mm ) since the concrete face is rarely straight. ( never I believe ) So always take that factor into consideration.
Step 3: Create the Steel Members ( Columns and Beams)
This is where you will feel that you are doing some progress! create the columns and the beams! Here it is important to make sure that the parts are in the correct orientation and the sections are defined as per the design requirements. In Addition, don't forget to double check all the materials are as per requirements.
Step 4: Create the connections ( base plate, End plate, Shear plate )
Here is the fun parts! Creating the connections! well, it wont be that much of fun at the beginning! ( honestly ) It will take some time to get used to it. You will need to spend around 1 to 2 hours on each connection at the beginning to get familiar with each one. But eventually you will master them!
Step 5: Create the GA Drawings
Creating the GA drawings needs some patience and detailing knowledge. You need to make sure all the dimensions and annotations are there. Also, you need to make sure you have created enough sections and views to cover all the details needed.
Step 6: Create the Assembly drawings
Well There should be a step before that, numbering the parts! it is a very important step. Make sure that the you have different prefix for each member type. Also, split the numbering series for each series of members of the same type. (We will teach you how to do that don't worry about it)
Step 7: Create the Reports
After creating the assembly drawings you need to create the BOQ, Assembly list, Bolt list, Drawing list etc. these are generated very easily Using the Report bottom or the Organizer.
Step 8: create the Plate for laser cutting
The final step is send the plate for laser cutting. To do so, we create an Multi sheet drawing in tekla and we combine the plates in that drawing to be sent for the supplier ( this process is done in Lebanon only since the supplier doesn't use CNC files )
